web design

the assignment below was given to my ae2 (intermediate) students recently. You can see their response here. they were remarkably frank and open, in spite of language problems. i have yet to truly collate the responses....i've been busy. it's coming!

Web design principles

Say whether you agree with one or more of these, given your experience. Was this true for you? Was your page good or bad for one of these reasons?

COLOR

RED is passion, love, danger, power, and strength but can also be blood, violence, war. Bad for some color-blind people. Watch out!

PINK is for girls, for selling feminine things, and is sometimes seen as weak. Don’t use it unless that’s what you want to sell.

ORANGE is vibrant, warm, and lively; it’s very popular on the web.

YELLOW is sunshine, happiness, growth, and gold; also, dishonesty, jealousy, and illness. Its lightness stimulates people (to click) but a whole page in yellow might be trouble.

GREEN is nature, environment, youth, spring but also envy. Could be trouble for color-blind.

PURPLE is royalty and love, but also cruelty, arrogance, and mourning.

BROWN is earthy, outdoors and warm, but considered dirty and dull.

GRAY is modern, intelligent, solid, clean, but also boring, dull, sad, and old.

BLUE is peaceful, calm, life-giving, and fresh, but dark blue is corporate/government (not good for theyoung and lively)

WHITE is clean, pure, peaceful, and snowy (good for skiers) but death (in Eastern cultures) and sterile.

BLACK is power, elegance, magic, and night, but death in the US, sad, and evil.

MOVEMENT:

If you have movement, for example a line or a picture that is moving as you open the page, use the movement of the viewer’s eye well. TAKE THE VIEWER WHERE YOU WANT HIM/HER to go. Direct their attention to a GOOD PLACE.

AVOID BLINKING, TOO MUCH MOVEMENT, or OVERACTIVITY.

CROWDEDNESS

Crowded is bad. The viewer won’t rest, won’t read, won’t stay, won’t click.

CONTRAST

Contrast is necessary, especially between type and background. There should be strong contrast.

ALIGNMENT

Alignment is good and peaceful. Aligning to the left is most common. Links are usually on the left.

TEXT

Text should not be in all bold, all italics, or all capitals.

SIMPLICITY and CLEANLINESS are valued.
