Aug. 1 blog report

Wow, August 1 numbers are dreadful, totally anemic. I could see it would be a slaughter as I recorded the facts, last month's visits, one at a time. I went through all the blogs: 8 commercial, 28 personal, and 7 dead ones that I keep track of for the heck of it. There are a few more dead ones that I don't keep track of, but I keep track of these 7 dead ones partly because I am considering (in a general kind of way) bringing them back or killing them.

All were down, 43 out of 45. One dead one was the same as last month, and one very small commercial one was up. All the rest were down, and very down. Now we're comparing rolling averages here, so an average of APR-MAY-JUNE, added and divided by three, is compared to an MAY-JUNE-JULY, divided by three. So comparing this month's rolling average with last month's is in a sense comparing April to July. And April was really rocking, if you recall, for reasons I don't even know now. First reason: for some reason April was huge. But this month even the dead ones fell. Second reason: it's seasonal, there are just a lot fewer people on the internet looking for stuff. Or, if my audience is primarily academic (as it is for a few of them), academic traffic shuts down in summer. There's a general seasonal theory of blog traffic - that it picks up when people are inside actively shopping (NOV) or just inside in general (FEB/MAR/APR) and conversely anemic when they all go outside (JUNE-JULY-AUG).

These numbers were so dreadful I'll come up with a few more theories. One is that I have slowed down a little, with dashing and all; I only hit nine of them this month and usually get at least twelve. What I fail to do this month is more likely to hurt next month totals, but it hurts this month too. I didn't feel like faking it if I had nothing to say. So, after a little flurry at the beginning of the month, I quit altogether and my blog posting never really recovered; I got nine altogether which is inadequate and got sick at the end of the month which made it impossible to recover the twelve.

I have lots of goals for the coming month. First, get twelve. Second, restore templates of a few of them. Interfconnect them better. Put more pop art on them and more links to my Amazon books.

Is that too much to ask?
